| Custom Sweaters - One of a Kind Sweaters. I've been knitting since I was seven years old. I never could leave a sweater pattern alone, always changing something, adding pockets, moving a neckline up or down a little, widening a sleeve, tapering a side seam, etc. I knitted my first sweater for my second grade school photo. It was a proud moment! Knitting unique, original sweaters has been my pleasure and my passion since I was a child (and I don't want to tell you exactly how many decades ago that really was). Custom Design Sweater Studio originally sold only hand knitted baby sweater outfits, with matching pants and rollbrim hats. I would knit all year on my home knitting machine, saving up dozens of baby sweater outfits, and in the fall, I would sell them at local crafts shows. The heirloom quality and distinct character of these one-of-a-kind designs made the sweaters very popular. Dinosaurs, bunnies, sheep, cows, flowers - every one of these sweaters was special to me. I still have customers from those crafts shows. Many of them encouraged me to sell my original, one of a kind designs in boutiques and local stores, which I have done. Then along came the internet, and wow, did things change. All of my business now comes from the internet, and nearly all of the sweaters which I design are for adults. Each of the custom designs is very unique. I've had some interesting requests over the years, including a custom design helmet for a model to wear on the runway in a fashion show, a red and green striped pullover sweater for a man who loves horror films, a bar stool pillow for a gentleman to give to his girlfriend, an artists' tunic with deep pockets for a painter who loves to put her tools in her pockets, a sweater with the flag of North Carolina on the back, a custom design for a kindergarten teacher with different color "hands" all over the sweater, a sweater with a gingerbread man on the front for a grade school teacher to wear to her school's annual Christmas play, etc. Each one of a kind design was a pleasure to work on. Most of my customers write to me after they receive their custom designs, with comments and compliments. Sometimes, customers will write to me years later, to tell me that they are still enjoying wearing the one of a kind design sweaters I knitted for them or their children. I hope you enjoy looking at the photos of these custom sweaters, and that they provide inspiration for your own custom knitted sweater design. Each of these one of a kind designs was carefully designed and knitted one row at a time on my home knitting machine. Some of them have areas of hand embroidery as well. The sweaters are beautifully constructed, each seam painstakingly linked and finished, one at a time and with every possible attention to detail. When you are ready to order your own One of a Kind Sweater, send me an email or give me a call toll free at 1-888-797-1088, and we'll get started on your design! Here's a custom sweater which was designed to be similar to the one worn by the comic strip character, the Blue Beetle.
The gentleman who ordered this custom sweater wrote to me after he received the sweater. Here's what he said: “I just wanted to let you know that we've received the sweater and it looks great! Thanks so much for your hard work and professionalism with getting this made. I've wanted this done for so long that it feels like I can finally check off that box in my life's to-do list, and I have you to thank for it. I realize that this was a tough job, and I thank you for seeing it through and doing such excellent work. It fits great and is nice and warm for the chilly San Francisco evenings. If there's anything else I can do for you, don't hesitate to ask, but otherwise it's been a pleasure doing business with you and thank you so much for this piece that I will keep forever. Cheers, Adam D." This custom sweater was designed for a woman whose son is on the crew team at an exclusive private school. She was the envy of the other mothers as she waited, cozy and warm in her sweater, standing near the side of the river in the early-morning fog.
The design on the sleeve is especially nice. Here's a closer look:
The design is a combination of work done on the home knitting machine, and hand embroidery. Here's what the customer said to me when she received her crew sweater: "“WOW !!!!! The sweater arrived yesterday just in time for our big regatta in Delaware at St. Andrew's. It fits just a tad roomy, but I imagine the first wash will fix that. It looks absolutely fabulous. 10 moms just had to know where it came from. I couldn't be more delighted. Is this a design that is now in your computer? If we wanted to offer one for a fund raiser next season, would you be able to recreate it? Thank you, again, Susan. Love it, Love it, Love it.” Melissa M. This sweater was ordered by a customer who is a horror film aficionado. The red and green striped pullover sweater is very similar to the one worn by the main actor in this series of horror films. I did my very best to copy the stripe pattern from a photo which the customer sent to me.
The customer was so excited when he received his custom design sweater! Here's what he said: "I got it today, and it is amazing. You have outdone yourself :) The fit is better than I expected. I'm sad to say this may be the last sweater I ever need to order, lol. Thank you so much!” Jeff A. Sometimes, I get special requests from people who want a sweater similar to the one worn by a favorite rock star. They send me a drawing or a photo, and I do my best to duplicate the style and specific design of the sweater. Here's a sweater which a young woman wanted to give to her boyfriend as a surprise gift. It is designed to be similar to one worn by a musician from the 1970's:
Look closely at the photo - I do all of the photography work on this website, and I'm afraid this isn't the best picture. The long, blue sleeves are folded over the front of the sweater. If you look carefully near the bottom, you can see the blue cuffs. Here's what my customer said when she received her custom design sweater: "“I have returned from my trip. My boyfriend loved the sweater. He was definitely surprised. He said "I cant wait for sweater season" he is exited about wearing it. Thank you again for making this surprise for him possible.” Nydia R. Several months later, I got another request from a different customer for this same design, this time as a short sleeve pullover sweater for a woman. Notice the shorter, fitted, cropped style of the sweater, color red hot, with poplin blue deep ribbing at the bottom edge and with roll-up sleeves, designed to be worn over a long-sleeve teeshirt. It was a Mother's Day gift from a gentleman whose wife is a devoted fan of this particular rock star.
Here's another custom design which was created with a musician in mind. "Cheap Chick" is an all-girl band in California, a take-off on the band called "Cheap Trick". The lead singer wanted a fitted pullover with a deep v-neck, tapered side seams, narrow sleeves and a motif which was very similar to the one on a sweater worn by the band "Cheap Trick". She drew her design for me on a piece of paper and sent it to me by fax. Together, we worked on the design until it was just right.
Sometimes, customers will request a custom knitted design with their company logo. Here is a sweater which I designed and knitted for a company in Florida. Each crew member on the tour boat got one of these sweaters:
Not all of my promotional designs are sweaters. Here is a photo of a hat with a company name knitted into the design, which I knitted for a surprise birthday party for the company's president:
Below is a close-up photo of the "Cable U" logo which I knitted into the front of a black pullover sweater. "Cable U" is an up-and-coming new television company in Long Island, New York. The owner of this television company wore his custom design sweater to a convention, where everyone who saw him saw the name of his company, too.
Recently, I knitted matching Varsity Letterman sweaters for twin teenage girls in Tennessee, just in time for an important football game. The bright orange color called "tangerine", used for the three stripes, the letter "T" and the lining of the set-in pocket, makes a beautiful, startling contrast against the pure white of the sweater. One sweater had the stripes and letter "T" on the right side, and the other sweater had the stripes and letter "T" on the left side. The twins looks so cute together!
Here's what the girls' mom had to say, when she received the two sweaters: "“Susan, they arrived and they are gorgeous! I can't believe the quality of these sweaters. … Gorgeous!” Rachel M. A gentleman requested a colorful cardigan sweater with a "windowpane" motif to be designed and knitted for him, with a shirt-type of collar and buttons down the front (cardigan style). I custom designed his sweater in a mosaic of bright, cheerful colors. He was delighted.
Over the years there have been several requests for custom design sweaters from grade school teachers. Once an elementary school teacher asked for a special design with a gingerbread man. Every year her class would put on a special play at Christmas, and one of the main characters in the play is a gingerbread man. The sweater delighted her, and her children.
Here's what the teacher said to me, when she received her gingerbread man design: "Wanna know how much of a hit my sweater was? Ya knocked 'em dead! =0) They loved it! It was so fun to wear it! Thanks again." Nancy W.
Here's another sweater which was designed and knitted for a teacher, this time a kindergarten teacher. Her husband wanted to surprise her on their anniversary. He requested a "hands" pattern, with each hand a different color, to represent the different children in her class. Note that one of the hands is reaching into her pocket. (That was my own idea - I do have a sense of humor.) From the alphabet borders to the multi-colored hands pattern, to the tiny hand painted pencil and blackboard buttons, this sweater was a sheer pleasure to design and knit.
Here's what the teacher's husband said to me when he received the sweater: "I have received the sweater, it is wonderful. I can hardly wait until Thursday to give my wife the present. Again thank you for working through your vacation to do this.” Fred S. I hope you have enjoyed looking through these photos of one of a kind sweaters which I have designed for other customers, and that it has inspired you with a few ideas of your own.
