Many of my hard to fit adult customers are statuesque women who for years have had trouble finding sweaters that fit them properly. For instance, sleeves that are the proper length can make the difference between a sloppy, oversized look and a tailored, elegant look.
In addition, you may be interested in the Comfort Fit Vest, a classic sweater vest which utilizes a clever knitting technique allowing for extra width and length across the stomach area of a gentlemen's vest or long sleeve sweater.

The above black and California gold striped sweater was custom knitted for a petite woman; it has petite length sleeves and body, and has extra width in the body of the sweater, from one side seam to the other.
The above baby blue v-neck vest was custom knitted for an older gentleman who has a rounded "tummy". Look at the width of the vest - the bottom of the vest is actually wider across the front than the top of the vest, near the underarms, allowing for extra width only across the stomach. The above crewneck pullover vest, color "lipstick", was custom knitted for a very petite lady, smaller than a size 2. So often a very petite woman has to purchase flat, shapeless children's clothes because there just are no suitable ladies' garments in her size - but with custom knitting, it is possible to create garments that fit and are shaped for a woman's figure, regardless of how petite the customer may be.
The above loden (forest green) and daffodil crewneck pullover sweater is a ladies' size 6 petite, with two inches of additional width across the body of the sweater. The extra width is completely undetectable when the sweater is worn. (Two inches of additional width across the front and across the back will give you a total of four extra inches of width.) If you are considering a size extra-large (or larger) sweater, please note that due to their width, sweaters size extra-large and larger will be knitted with side panels. The seaming of the side panels is barely noticeable. Depending on the design of your particular sweater, it is sometimes possible to make the panels into part of the design, for instance as shown in the gold and black sweater in the above photo. The photo shown below, a closeup of a Cayenne (bright red) and loden (dark forest green) striped extra-large sweater, shows what it will look like when the side panels are seamed to the main body of the sweater.
