Susan Feltman Sweater Designs LLC, t/a Custom Design Sweater Studio, is a one-person, home-based design studio. I have been knitting since I was seven years old. Originally, I sold hand knitted baby sweater and hat sets locally at New Jersey craft shows and from my home. Over the years, the business changed from baby sweaters to designs for men and women.
I am semi-retired now, working only four days a week, but still going strong. Over the thirty years in which I have been selling my designs, I have been privileged to have many interesting customers, among them Ron Leamon, the costume designer who worked on Blue Velvet, among other films; Shout, a character from Nickelodeon, the children's TV network; and Mo Rocca, the Food Network TV star from My Grandmother's Ravioli, among other shows. I have knitted sweaters for Chucky, the infamous doll who stars in a series of movies, and for Fedor Emelianenko, the boxer, who sold his custom knitted striped sweater on eBay when the match was canceled at the last minute. Along the way, there have been hundreds of ordinary citizens from every walk of life, teachers, engineers, a group of scientists presenting a retiring colleague with a sweater that was designed in the spectrum of colors of a drug he had worked on; for a music buff, a hand embroidered sweater designed like a copy of the album cover of Dark Side of the Moon; and who could forget the iconic Freddy Kreuger striped red and green sweater, designed for his fans, and there have been so many over the years. Hundreds of customers, hundreds of sweaters, and I appreciate each and every one of you. You are all equally special to me.
You can learn more about the business by watching this YouTube video. In it, I discuss the different types of sweaters which I've knitted, display some of the yarn which I use in my designs, and at the end, demonstrate how the knitting machine works.
Because so many of my custom designs have a single large initial monogram or a word(s) incorporated into the knitted fabric, a sample of my work was chosen to be included in the textbook, "Lettering and Process" written by Andrew Haslam, which is used in the UK by university textile design students. My technique for hand knitting lettering into the fabric, along with photographs of my work, are included in the textbook. Thank you, Andrew Haslam, for allowing me to be included in your excellent design textbook!
The photo below shows me in my studio, hard at work at my home knitting machine, a Brother KH-970.
Designing and knitting has been my passion for most of my life. Nothing makes me happier than spending time in my studio, working on a new design. It will be my pleasure to create something special just for you.
